After fifteen years playing in the professional poker circuits, Gus Hansen finally won his first World Series of Poker bracelet. The Danish player, nicknamed the Great Dane, already has three World Poker Tour open titles and since he started playing poker professionally in 1997 he has been chasing the coveted golden bracelet, which was elusive until now.

Hansen achieved his goal at the World Series of Poker Europe High Roller Heads-up event. Along with the bracelet he took home a £288,409 prize, which made his total winnings in poker tournament go over the $10 million mark. A total of 103 poker players entered the tournament, which ended with a heads-up with the best-two-of-three series format between the Danish player and 21-year-old American player Jim Collopy.

The event took place at the Leicester Square’s Empire Casino and Hansen was obviously happy to get to the final. “I’ve been playing in the WSOP since 1996 when my good friend, Huck Seed, won the Main Event,” he commented. “I’ve had a lot of attempts since then and come close a couple of times. I’m also surprised it came in a heads-up event.”

Hansen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark but currently resides in Monte Carlo. He has also lived in New York, Santa Cruz and Las Vegas. The poker player currently appears in several television shows, including the High Stakes Poker and Late Night Poker.
