If you think that there is only one variation of poker you should reconsider. The fact of the matter is that there are many different types of poker that you can play. Before you can get started with this game you will want to become familiar with the different variations that are played all over the world. The more that you know about the different types of poker the better off you will be in the long run. After all, you cannot afford to be playing one type of poker while everybody else at the table is playing another. If you get caught doing this you might as well just give the other players your money.

So what types of poker are available?  The most common variations of the game are listed below. Remember, there is not one type that is better than the other. They are all common in different circles, and you should give each one a try. This way you can learn which type is best for you, as well as which ones do not suit your needs.

Draw Poker

There are many variations of draw poker, but all in all there are some basic rules that govern these games. The basics of draw poker are quite simple. Players are dealt a full hand by the dealer, and then they have the option to swap cards they do not like for new ones from the deck. Variations of draw poker are usually the easiest to understand, and for this reason they are most popular among new poker players.

Stud Poker

In stud poker variations, players are dealt an initial amount of cards to get the game started.  Each time a betting round finishes, a new card is dealt to each player until each one has seven in their hand. There are some variations of stud poker where seven cards are dealt up front.

Shared Card Poker

There are many variations of shared card poker. Players are dealt a small amount of cards initially. In addition, cards are then placed in the center of the table, and are shared by all the players at the table. The most popular type of shared card poker is Texas Hold ‘Em. This game has taken off as of late, and the majority of people who play poker want to get involved with this variation sooner rather than later.

As you can imagine, it can be quite difficult to learn about all the types of poker games you can play. If you do not take your time learning about each game you will run into problems down the line. Remember, each variation has its own rules that you must become familiar with. You should never move onto a new type of poker until you are familiar with the game that you are currently trying to master.
